As a recruiter, you do all you can to improve your candidate experience. With the rise in the use of artificial intelligence (AI), you should be taking advantage of recruitment chatbots to improve the efficiency and responsiveness of your hiring process.

What a Chatbot Is

A recruitment chatbot uses AI to understand and respond to messages. Like Siri, Google Home and Alexa, a recruitment chatbot uses machine learning, natural language processing (NLP) and other forms of AI to understand messages and give appropriate answers. A chatbot may be used with email, text messages, social media profiles, messaging apps and specific software such as an applicant tracking system (ATS). Because candidates have access to information 24/7 and are more efficiently moved through the recruiting process, chatbots improve the overall candidate experience. Recruiters have more time to focus on building relationships with and placing qualified candidates.

Chatbots Can Give Job-Related Information

A chatbot can collect a candidate’s resume; ask screening questions about their knowledge, skills and experience; and rank candidates based on their qualifications, engagement, recent activity and other metrics. A chatbot can answer questions about the job, company culture and the application process; schedule an interview with a recruiter; and send collected information to an ATS or recruiter for follow up. Because the qualifying and scheduling process is automated, unqualified candidates are quickly screened out and qualified ones are set up for interviews. As a result, candidates meet with the recruiter faster, have more time to build a relationship, stay engaged in the process longer and are more likely to accept job offers.

Candidates Still Talk With Recruiters

Although chatbots may handle tasks early in the recruiting process, qualified candidates get to talk with a recruiter during and after the interview process. Because people want to work with people, keeping the human touch is important. A recruiter determines whether a candidate is a good fit for a role, provides coaching for a more effective interview, gives feedback after the job interview and negotiates job offers on behalf of candidates.
